Are there advantages to a Polygamy?

Well, having lots of siblings can be fun. Even in the worst of situations, having others around you who understand you is a great thing.

I’ve seen polygamist families who were a good example of what polygamy can be like. The kids were all good friends, and the wives loved each other like sisters. If you didn’t know which children belonged to which mother, you couldn’t tell the difference, because all the parents loved all the children equally. The dad was the primary provider, but some of the wives had part-time jobs, while at least one of them was the stay-at-home mom while the others worked, and they would rotate. They would have picnics and outings often, and sometimes, looking at how happy they were it would make you almost envious. The older children would help with the chores and finances.

But where there is one good example of a polygamist family, there are ten bad ones. Families where everyone is jealous and hateful, taking sides and inciting drama. Bullying, domestic abuse, and poverty are not uncommon.

From an unbiased standpoint, I guess that you could say that it has it’s benefits, but trust me, it is not for everyone. Especially not if you are a possessive person. If you like things, and you want to have stuff that is just yours, you would be miserable in polygamy. It is a lifestyle that requires a lot of self-sacrifice for things to go smoothly.

Personally, polygamy is an absolute no, because of all the ways it can go terribly wrong.

But for polygamy, I have yet to see a reasonably satisfactory answer. The responses over the years have always been in this general complexion: —

Advantages

  1. To have multiple sexual partners — the common advantage in all places or communities that practise polygamy.
  2. One male ‘geniuses could spread his genes more extensively than otherwise.

Disadvantages

  1. People think you’re sick in the head — or your name is mud at best.
  2. One male klutz could spread his genes more extensively than otherwise.
  3. The practice of polygamy would make your life partner more insecure and more distrustful of you.
  4. Personal relationships become even more complicated than otherwise, not just with the wives but with the kids too.
  5. Massive litigation over inheritance.
  6. Occurs well enough for high-status men but leaves low-status men wifeless — therefore impacting on the marriage opportunities for young men.
  7. Polygamy is against the law in many countries, period.
  8. A framework for crimes, such as rotational prostitution, slavery, fraud, child trafficking, etc.
  9. A framework for social problems, such as child neglect and sexual abuse.
