Emotions and Politics

It is for a fact that the majority of us have raw and intense feelings towards politics, especially in the underdeveloped countries. Many people of countries have gone to wars against their own established governments based on intuitive emotions. Every household has members claim politics to always matter. Even today, I for the majority of times judge a situation more emotionally especially when it involves the weak and the poor. Moreover, any engagement or disengagement that I have with politics is motivated by emotions and any speech by my favorite leaders appeals to it and further cultivates it.

Description: People Rallying on Street

There is still so much ambiguity and disappointment by the leaders of Pakistan that it has allowed the majority of the people to feel uneasy or fearful to express about certain issues. Pakistan has never remained a truly democratic governance system, rather it has been a mix of both democratic and anarchy form of government where no one is allowed to talk or discuss sensitive issues such as religions, acceptable western culture, etc. A person like me who believes in freedom of expression feels alienated, disconnected, humiliated, angry, hopeless, and frustrated with the actions of the political leaders.

It seems unlikely, at this present time of uncertainty, that many people would describe their feelings about politics as hopeful. Optimism is something distinct from hope; a ‘thick’ version of it often implies confidence that good things do or will happen, rather than a belief that things could be otherwise. This is true when people feel that their feelings and lives do not matter to others. It is well understood that Politicians know that turning on the tears can be a vote winner but I am definitely not one of them. There have been many episodes during my lifetime that aggravated my anxiety levels for such issues as child rapes, mistreatment of the poor and child trafficking, etc.

This is true that politicians have always exploited our instincts and real-time media has also played a pivotal role in placing more trust in sensation and emotion than in actual evidence. This gives a tingle to my nervous impulses and feelings. The daily wars, illness outbreaks, and other global issues which are being addressed by the political leaders in such an emotionally blackmailing makes me sick to the stomach considering that all they are bothered about is the hunger of power while manipulating the emotions of the common people. It is not fair! And for how long can we go on like this? This has to stop one day and we need to remain rational when it comes to making political supporting decisions as it involves the betterment of the society and the whole nation.
